Gertrude Hambira
Ms. Gertrude Hambira is a Human Rights Defender who helped to form the Largest
Trade Union Movement in Zimbabwe in 1989 to promote, advance, and protect the
rights and interests of workers in the agricultural sector. More specifically, she
championed and supported the rights of farm workers in Zimbabwe, raising their
plight at national and international levels. Since 2000, tens of thousands of farm
workers have suffered violent attacks , land seizures and have been displaced from
commercial farms. Ms. Hambira has been a frequent victim of harassment and
intimidation forcing her and her family into exile .
